Going Home to Glory: A Memoir of Life with Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961-1969

I love a good biography, and this book definitely falls into that category. This book was one of the books I read early this year in my quest to learn more about the history of our great nation. The list of books I went through in this quest include works on Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt as well. It’s fitting to bring this book to the blog, here on the eve of another Presidential race.

This book is a touching account of the life of a retired President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, as told by his grandson David. David spent many years of his youth living on the family farm near Gettysburg. During that time he became his grandfather’s greatest student, learning about life and the way American politics worked. Living with the former President gave him a chance to rub elbows with some of the most important people in government. He also had a front seat to the life of a retired leader, as new leaders came to him for advice or to seek endorsements. David also had a chance to see the frailty behind the strong image his grandfather projected.

This book is a wonderful look at the real life of a retired President. David Eisenhower put together some intimate images of the strengths and weaknesses of this legendary leader. I was surprised at the many people who came to the President for help in his later years. It wasn’t just those looking for a good word, but those who truly wanted some of his wisdom to assist in making difficult decisions.

The eight years documented are the last of Eisenhower’s life, and the love and warmth in the writing is powerful. I felt like I was able to understand the relationship of love and respect between Dwight and his wife Mamie. I was also really surprised at the openness with which some of the most special moments between the grandfather and grandson are shared. This honesty might be the strength of this wonderful book.

I think this book will appeal to anyone who loves biographies, and perhaps even more to those who love history. The pages of the book are filled with personal moments as well as insight into some of President Eisenhower’s biggest challenges throughout his career.
